Apart from sunlight, wind is the most available natural resource.  In fact, wind power has long played a role in human affairs.  Long before the advent of electricity or gasoline, wind powered ships across the seas, turned windmills to grind grain and more.  Today, wind is coming back into power, with more and more manufactures offering compact wind turbine devices that can help consumers reduce their dependence on the power grid.

What can wind generators do for your needs?  What are these solutions?  Wind generators are actually little more than wind turbine devices.  Usually, they are mounted high above the treetops, on a long metal pole or scaffolding.  This places the turbine within the higher, faster moving air that it needs for constant power.

The wind spins the turbine’s blades, which in turn spins a generator housed within the turbine’s body.  This generator creates electrical energy from the mechanical power of the wind, which is then sent to batteries for storage, or into the home for immediate use.  Of course, this is a bit simplistic, as these devices are more complicated than this, but it should serve to illustrate the process quite well.

Compact wind turbine manufacturers have been able to greatly reduce the size and scope of wind generators, creating small devices that are capable of providing up to 1/3 of the electrical needs in the average home.  This has the benefit of reducing the footprint needed by the device, without sacrificing the ability to generate sufficient power to offset the investment in wind technology.

When choosing a compact wind turbine for your home, you should consider several factors.  First, you’ll need to obtain a wind map of your local area, to determine if you have sufficient sustained wind speeds throughout the year to make wind generation a viable option.  The smaller the wind turbine is, the lower the minimum sustained wind speed will be, but some areas simply do not have sufficient wind throughout the year.

In addition, you will need to consider how many turbines you want to install, where the battery will be located and what type of in-home control panel you will need to control the system.  The best option is to find a qualified alternative energy company and obtain a quote from them.  These companies can help ensure that you are able to have a wind system that works for your needs, with minimum hassle.
