Are you looking for an inexpensive way to build your own vertical axis wind turbine? Here's a way to go better than inexpensive - how about cheap? It's a DIY vertical wind turbine. All you need is a broomstick, four ball bearings, two buckets, and some pipe. It's easy as pie if you follow the steps given below.

Get the Parts You'll Need

1. Four ball bearings with an inner diameter of 25mm and an outer diameter of 50nn,

2. A broomstick handle that fits inside the bearings.

3. PVC tubing with a 50mm inner diameter.

4. An end cap for the PVC tubing.

5. Two large buckets.

6. A handful of plaster screws at least 50mm long.

Prepare the Bearings

1. Pry off the seals and remove all the grease.

2. Rinse the bearings with turpentine to ensure that they spin easily.

3. Replace the seals.

Make the Shaft

1. Cut the PVC tube slightly shorter than the broom handle, and then cut it in half.

2. Slide two bearings to the center of the broom handle. Tap them on if necessary.

3. Slide on the two PVC tubes and tap them in place for a tight fit.

4. Tap the other bearings into the open ends of each tube.

5. Fit the end cap onto one of the tube ends.

Create the Blades

1. Cut both buckets in half vertically to create four blades.

2. Using a hole saw, cut a hole in the top of each of the four halves, so it fits over the top of the broom handle extending from the top of the shaft.

Attach the Blades

1. Screw on one blade to the top of the shaft.

2. Add some screws down the side.

3. Add another blade as described in the previous step.

4. Add the other two blades as described above, but below the first two, and rotated 90 degrees.

5. Drill some small holes where the top two blades meet the bottom two, and lash them together with wire to stiffen the assembly.

Congratulations. You've just create a cheap DIY vertical axis wind turbine. Set it up to turn your generator, and test drive it. It should run very well at wind speed of about eight miles per hour.
